About cookies and us

Here is a beautiful poem that I would like to share to you today.

The CookiesThis is a reality check. As the last paragraph of this poem said, “How many times in our lives, have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discover later that what we believed to be true … was not?

The Cookie Thief
by Valerie Cox

A woman was waiting at an airport one night,
With several long hours before her flight.
She hunted for a book in the airport shops.
Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.

She was engrossed in her book but happened to see,
That the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be.
Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between,
Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.

So she munched the cookies and watched the clock,
As the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,
Thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I would blacken his eye.”

With each cookie she took, he took one too,
When only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh,
He took the last cookie and broke it in half.

He offered her half, as he ate the other,
She snatched it from him and thought… oooh, brother.
This guy has some nerve and he’s also rude,
Why he didn’t even show any gratitude!

She had never known when she had been so galled,
And sighed with relief when her flight was called.
She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate,
Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat,
Then she sought her book, which was almost complete.
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise,
There was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes.

If mine are here, she moaned in despair,
The others were his, and he tried to share.
Too late to apologize, she realized with grief,
That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.

How many times in our lives,
have we absolutely known
that something was a certain way,
only to discover later that
what we believed to be true … was not?

Wow! Ang galing naman ng story! This teaches us to hear all sides of the story first before jumping into conclusions. 😀

myepinoy says, they say that “the truth shall set us free.” In this case, the lady is caught in grief and guilt. Am I making sense? LOL

Thanks for sharing this with us. Magandang reminder for all of us.

    myepinoy says, It surely is.

Nag-isip tuloy ako. How many times have I entertained bad thoughts about people .. sneaking suspicions … that turned out to be just my imagination and paranoia.

myepinoy says, lingering doubt and paranoia??? Well, with our present situation now especially in our cities plus the daily bad and gruesome news that we have to digest from our TV and newspapers (isama mo pa ang mga telenovela na punong puno ng violence), what do we expect? In a way, na-trained na tayo to be paranoid.

wow! ang galing naman! Thats was may first expression when i finished reading the story.. I was suprised when i read the first comment that we had the same expression.. Very nice and its a reminder to all of us that we should not judge easily a person and if there are times in our life that we feel so disgusted we should always think the consequences.. before we make drastic actions.Good thing she did not confronted the man because she doest want any scene at least the damage was less. There are times in our lives, that the person that we thought is bad ….. was actually the person who is really good and willing to share unconditionally..

    Nice one!

myepinoy says, we were taught at early age not to judge (this way) but circumstances and environment reinforces the opposite; constant exposure makes practice easy and practice makes perfect. LOL

Very nice, I agree with you myepinoy with all the kabalahuraan here kaya minsan nagiging judgmental ang isang tao.

myepinoy says, OO nga. Musta ka na ba?

I was very hesitant to read the poem coz i think it would be all about sweet cookie crunchs. Man, i was so wrong. I read it anyway and loved. It wasn’t about cookies after all. Cookies were just a piece of the plot. gee, thanks for the post, it made my day.,

myepinoy says, I am glad you learned something from this. Thank you for the visit and your comment.

uhhmm I have a similar experience. I got mad at this saleslady because I thought she did not give me the right change only to find out later na sobra pa nga yung sukli nya sa akin…

myepinoy says, well, tao lang tayo di ba?

una natatawa ako sa kwento ng tula tapos in the end..wala na nanlaki na ulo ko. I don’t know if I was expecting something more..like is it GOD who was with her munched half of her cookies? parang footprints in the sand diba?

However, the ending has a better story. Mas lapag sa lupa dahil naging visible sa human eye yung guy. At tiyak nakakarelate ang lahat.

myepinoy says, korek ka dyan. magaling ang writer.

Sabi nga nila our first impressions and preceptions appear as reality to us when they’re not even close to the truth ! It humbles a person when he/she finds out the truth 🙂

    myepinoy says, very very true.

read this from an email sent to me. this is truly a reality check. and perhaps a reminder that we have to check first before we conclude, or be very careful not to jump into conclusions easily. we are all guilty, i think. 😀
